Kelompok SEPI. This literally means a group of the outsider-artists. It was formed in 1997 to help young artists who were mostly self-taught to empower themselves. Through cooperation the group has become much larger and consists of a diverse range of peoples. In this spirit of cooperation the SEPI group also has concerns about social life and contributing to the well being of their community.
Kelompok SEPI has commenced a project with a Yogyakarta safe house for street kids. The safe house called Pondok Rakyat, is a Non Government Organization which works in the slums of Yogyakarta .The safe house provides an education programme for the street kids. The SEPI group assists this learning programme through their teaching of art. In addition to art, the group promotes learning through the spirit of cooperation.
The latest project has set up an internet gallery which includes paintings done by the SEPI group and some of the street kids. These paintings are able to be viewed on the website http://www.kelompoksepi.blogspot.com, and are available to purchase. The SEPI group will donate 25% of their painting sales to the safe house. The full 100% of the street kids’ sales goes to the children through the safe house education program.
